This Riff features the intro chord progression from the classic Eagles' song "Hotel California". This chord progression is played using a "capo" (pronounced "Kay-Poe") at the 7th fret position. By using a capo, chords that are normally played in the open position can now be moved further up the fretboard. This means that common chord shapes like G, C, D, A and E can now be played in a higher position, which changes the pitch of the chords as well as the overall Key of the music. The chord progression in this week's video makes use of several different chord shapes, and each chord is in the progression is played as an arpeggio, which means that the notes of the chord are picked one string at a time. The first step in mastering this guitar part is to memorize the changes between the various chords. From there you can focus much more on your picking hand to get the right "articulation" for each individual arpeggio. You'll notice in the video that this progression is labeled "Guitar Part One". That's because the original studio recording of this song actually includes MORE than one guitar part. In future installments of this series, we'll look at some of the OTHER guitar parts that are used to create the sound of this classic tune. As you're practicing, remember that you can SLOW DOWN the video and LOOP IT until you can get each chord change and arpeggio up to full speed.
