"Take Me Out" - Franz Ferdinand

Hello Fretlight Players - here is this week's FREE "Fretlight Video Riff"!

This week's Video Riff features the main chorus section from "Take Me Out" as played by Franz Ferdinand. This riff is based on the notes of the E Minor Scale and is played at the 7th position. An important part of nailing the sound of this riff is getting the correct rhythm. This means that you should pay close attention to your picking hand as well as your fretting hand to make sure they are working together. Even though all of the fretted notes in this riff are played in a single position, your main focus with this riff is getting the timing down. Remember that you can SLOW DOWN the video and LOOP IT until you can get the riff up to full speed.

"Fly By Night" - Rush

Hello Fretlight Players - here is this week's FREE "Fretlight Video Riff"!

This week's Video Riff features the intro chord progression from "Fly By Night" as played by the Canadian rock trio Rush. This progression is based on a sequence of six different chords, which are D major, A7 sus 4, C add 9, G/B, G minor/Bb, and A major. The sound of this progression comes from the combination of stummed chords along with arpeggiated chords. There is also a short little scale riff that is used to tie together the chord change from A7 sus 4 to C add 9. Pay close attention to your picking hand as well as your fretting hand to make sure that they are working together to get the right chord changes as well as the right picking and strumming patterns. Remember that you can SLOW DOWN the video and LOOP IT until you can get the progression and the rhythm up to full speed.

"White Horse" - Taylor Swift

Hello Fretlight Players - here is this week's FREE "Fretlight Video Riff"!

This week's Video Riff features the intro chord progression from "White Horse" as played by Taylor Swift. This progression is based on a sequence of three chords, which are C Major, F sus 2 and A minor 7th. The tricky part of this progression is that each chord is played fingerstyle, so put down the pick for this one. When practicing each chord, you must use a combination of two different fingerstyle techniques: "pinching" two strings at the same time, and "walking" between single notes played on individual strings. The easy part of this progression is mastering the chord changes, but the challenge is to use the correct "articulation" with your picking hand to get each chord to sound right. Remember that you can SLOW DOWN the video and LOOP IT until you can get the chord changes and the correct picking patterns and techniques up to full speed.
