"When I Come Around" - Green Day

Hello again Fretlight Players - here is your FREE "Fretlight Video Riff"!

This week's Riff features the intro chord progression from the song "When I Come Around" as played by the band Green Day. This is a straight ahead progression that is based around four different chords, which are G 5, D 5, E Minor, and C 5. Three out of four chords in this progression are "5th Chords", also known as "Power Chords", which are very common in the music of a band like Green Day. There are three things to watch for in this progression that are essential to getting the sound of the song. The first is the use of "Overdrive" or "Distortion". If your amplifier has this function, crank it up to get that full, heavy sound. The second thing to watch for is the use of "Palm Muting" with the picking hand. A big part of the "chugging" sound that you hear in this progression comes from the use of palm muting. The third thing to watch for is the use of "Fret Hand Muting", which is when the fingers of the fretting hand muffle the strings while the picking hand is still strumming the strings. You will hear this technique used with the first three chords in this progression. Remember that you can SLOW DOWN the video and LOOP IT until you can get each chord change up to speed, and really try to nail the palm muting as well as fret hand muting techniques.

This week's Riff features the intro section from the song "Come As You Are" as played by the influential grunge band Nirvana. This is a pretty simple riff that is played in the open poisition and uses notes from the Low E string and the A string. There are two things to watch for in this riff, which are the string changes that happen with the picking hand as well as the rhythm and timing of the riff. The rhythm and picking make up a big part of the sound of this riff, so really focus on playing in time as you practice each part. "Iron Man" - Black Sabbath

This Riff features the main chord progression from the classic Black Sabbath song "Iron Man". This chord progression is played using a series of Power Chords, also known as "5th Chords". There are two important things to watch for in this progression, which are the rhythm of the chord changes, and the "sliding" technique that is used between several of the chords. The use of slides is a big part of the sound of this progression, and these slides really help to smooth out some of the chord changes, as opposed to strumming every individual chord. "Hotel California" - The Eagles

Hello again Fretlight Players - here is your FREE "Fretlight Video Riff"!

This Riff features the intro chord progression from the classic Eagles' song "Hotel California". This chord progression is played using a "capo" (pronounced "Kay-Poe") at the 7th fret position. By using a capo, chords that are normally played in the open position can now be moved further up the fretboard. This means that common chord shapes like G, C, D, A and E can now be played in a higher position, which changes the pitch of the chords as well as the overall Key of the music. The chord progression in this week's video makes use of several different chord shapes, and each chord is in the progression is played as an arpeggio, which means that the notes of the chord are picked one string at a time. The first step in mastering this guitar part is to memorize the changes between the various chords. From there you can focus much more on your picking hand to get the right "articulation" for each individual arpeggio. You'll notice in the video that this progression is labeled "Guitar Part One". That's because the original studio recording of this song actually includes MORE than one guitar part. In future installments of this series, we'll look at some of the OTHER guitar parts that are used to create the sound of this classic tune. This week's Video Riff features the intro guitar section from "Dammit" as played by Blink 182. A big part of the sound of this riff is the use of one specific "Rhythmic Motif". This riff has four individual phrases that are all based on the same rhythmic pattern, which is exactly what using a "Rhythmic Motif" is all about: The scale notes change, but the rhythm and picking stay the same. The notes in this riff all come from the open position C Major Scale, which means that all of the notes are played within the range of the first three frets of the neck. Because this riff is based on the C Major Scale, there are no sharps or flats used - all of the notes are "natural" notes from the Musical Alphabet. Pay close attention to the motion of your fretting hand as well as your picking hand to make sure that both hands are working together in unison. This riff is played at a fast tempo, so remember that you can SLOW DOWN the video and LOOP IT until you can get each scale phrase up to full speed.

"Silent Night" - Fingerstyle Arrangement

For this week's Video Riff we're celebrating the holiday season with a fingerstyle arrangment of "Silent Night". In this arrangement you'll be combining the melody notes of the song with some chord voicings to provide the underlying harmony. Playing melody and harmony simultaneously is certainly a challenge, but this style essentially allows you to play a duet (two parts) by yourself. This is often referred to as "Chord/Melody" playing, and is normally done with fingerpicking technique, so put down the pick for this one. Remember that you can SLOW DOWN the video and LOOP IT until you can get all of the chord vocings and melodies to fit together.

"Roxanne" - The Police

Hello Fretlight Players - here is this week's FREE "Fretlight Video Riff"!

This week's Video Riff features the intro chord progression from "Roxanne" as played by The Police. The progression for this song is based on a series of Triads that are played on the three thinnest strings (the High E, B and G strings), and this progression uses a combination of Major and Minor Triads as well as a few Suspended Triads. The challenge with this progression is to play the chords "staccato", which means that each rhythm is played with a very short duration, giving each chord a "choppy" sound. Even though the chords are played with a rhythm that falls on the beat, the duration of each chord is not held for a full Quarter Note value - instead, the rhythm is played "staccato" to sound more like an eighth note followed by an eighth rest. This type of rhythm is what gives the song such a unique sound. Pay close attention to your fretting hand as well as your strumming hand to get this part to sound right. "Because" - The Beatles

Hello Fretlight Players - here is this week's FREE "Fretlight Video Riff"!

This week's Riff features the verse chord progression from "Because" as played by The Beatles. This song comes from the 1969 album "Abbey Road" and is a great example of the unique writing style that is characteristic of the band's later writing period. Although many of the chords used in this progression are straight ahead Major and Minor chords, there are also several "tension" chords that are used to spice things up, including 7th and 13th chords as well as a few Diminished chord variations. These new chord types really add a lot of depth and movement to the progression and help to contribute to the overall "eeriness" of the song. This week's Riff features the main verse section from "Message In A Bottle" as played by The Police. The riff for this song incorporates a series of several different arpeggios. The real challenge with this riff deals with the types of chord shapes that are used, and the wide stretches that must be made with the fretting hand. Try to keep your thumb BEHIND the guitar neck when playing these chords. This will really help the fingers to spread out and help you to be able to reach each of the different positions that are used. If you've never played chord forms with wide intervals like these before, you will find that it takes quite a bit of practice and repetition to really get these forms to move smoothly around the fretboard. Remember that you can SLOW DOWN the video and LOOP IT until you can get the transitions from chord to chord up to full speed.

This week's Riff features the intro section from "Life In The Fast Lane" as played by The Eagles. The riff for this song incorporates two different guitar parts, each playing the same melody, but in different octaves. The main section is played by the first guitar in a lower octave while the second guitar doubles this part an octave higher. This week's Riff includes both sections (the low as well as high octave parts). Technique wise, this riff incorporates some hammer-ons as well as some very fast slides that give the riff a bluesy, "slippery" type of sound. Remember that you can SLOW DOWN the video and LOOP IT until you can get both guitar parts up to full speed.

This week we're paying tribute to the late great Ronnie James Dio who passed away on May 16th at the age of 67. This week's Riff features the main chord progression from Dio's song "Holy Diver". The progression for this song is based around several different power chord shapes (also known as "5th chords"), and incorprates some 8th note and 16th note rhythms along with some palm muting technique. A big part of the sound of this progression comes from the use of "overdrive" or "distortion", so if your amplifier has this type of setting, crank in up! Remember that you can SLOW DOWN the video and LOOP IT until you can get the all of the chord changes up to speed.

This week's Video features the main riff from "Limelight" by Rush. This riff uses a combination of single note scale playing along with chords and strumming. The most important thing to work on with this riff is the rhythm. The timing of this riff is a little tricky, but this is what makes the riff so cool to play (the first several measures are in 4/4 time, and after the drums enter, the remaining measures are in 7/4 time). Remember that you can SLOW DOWN the video and LOOP IT until you can get the entire riff up to full speed.

"Kiss A Girl" - Keith Urban

Hello Fretlight Players - we've got another special treat for you this week!

This week's FREE video features Keith Urban teaching you how to play the chords for the intro section of his hit song "Kiss A Girl". There are two very important things to watch for in this video: First, you will notice that several of the chord shapes that Keith uses require some wide stretches with the fretting hand, so make sure that you keep your thumb behind the neck when practicing each of the chord shapes. Second, Keith uses a lot of percussive strumming with his picking hand. As he strums the chords, he brings his hand down onto the strings to create a really cool rhythmic "backbeat". Remember that you can SLOW DOWN the video and practice at your own pace until you can get up to full speed.

"Bring It On Home" - Led Zeppelin

This week's Video features the main riff from "Bring In On Home" by Led Zeppelin. When Jimmy Page recorded this song, he used the process of "overdubbing" in the recording studio to add several different layers to the riff. Once he had recorded the main riff, he added two additional "harmony" guitar parts to create the effect of three different guitars all playing simultaneously. This week's Video shows you how to play each of those three parts. This really allows you to hear the effect that "overdubbing" creates. From a technique perspective, this riff includes lots of hammer ons, bends, and vibrato, so don't forget to SLOW DOWN the video and LOOP IT until you can get each part of the riff up to full speed.
